What is matcha?
Matcha is a type of powdered green tea that is distinct from regular green tea in both its preparation and its health benefits. Unlike traditional green tea, where the leaves are steeped and then discarded, matcha is made by grinding whole tea leaves into a fine powder. This means you consume the entire leaf, which provides a more concentrated source of nutrients and flavor.
Quality
There is a big difference in quality between matcha and matcha, which can be broken down in three areas
-
Color & Texture
High-quality matcha has a vibrant, bright green color. This indicates that the leaves were well-shaded and processed properly, preserving the chlorophyll and other beneficial compounds.
The powder should be very fine and smooth, almost silky to the touch. Coarser powders can be a sign of lower quality and might not dissolve well.
-
Taste
High-quality matcha should have a balanced, rich flavor with a mix of sweetness and umami. It should be smooth and not overly bitter. Inferior matcha might taste harsh or astringent.
-
Origin
Matcha from well-regarded regions in Japan, such as Uji, Nishio, or Kagoshima, often signifies higher quality. These regions have traditional practices and conditions conducive to producing premium matcha.

Health benefits
Rich in Antioxidants: Matcha is a potent source of antioxidants, particularly catechins like EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate). These antioxidants help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, supporting overall health and potentially reducing the risk of chronic diseases.
Sustained Energy and Focus: The unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine in matcha provides a balanced energy boost. Unlike coffee, which can lead to spikes and crashes in energy levels, matcha offers a steady release of energy, enhancing mental focus and alertness while promoting a calm state of mind.
