Frequently asked questions

What is matcha tea?

Matcha tea is a type of powdered green tea, made from finely ground and shade-grown tea leaves. During the production the tea plants are covered with shade before harvest to increase chlorophyll and amino acids, which gives the matcha its vibrant green color and rich flavor.

What is the difference between matcha and green tea?

Unlike traditional green tea, you consume the whole leaf in powdered form when you drink Matcha tea. This gives a more concentrated flavor and more nutrition. Read more about the health benefits of matcha here.

Where does Juth Matcha come from?

Our matcha powder comes from family owned matcha farms in Uji, Kyoto, Japan.

Does matcha contain coffeine?

Matcha contains less caffeine than a standard cup of coffee. A typical serving (1 teaspoon) of matcha powder contains about 35–70 mg of caffeine, while a typical serving of a cup of brewed coffee (240 ml) contains about 95–200 mg of caffeine, depending on the type of coffee bean and brewing method.

While matcha has less caffeine than coffee, the effect is different due to the presence of L-theanine, an amino acid in matcha that promotes relaxation and smooths out the caffeine's stimulatory effect. This leads to a more sustained and calm energy boost, rather than the quick spike and crash often associated with coffee.

How do I make matcha tea?

You need:

0.5-1.5 tsp Juth ceremonial or Juth organic matcha powder
1 dl 80°C water
Your choice of milk
Bamboo whisk or frother
Any wide, shallow bowl
(Fine mesh sieve)

1. Tip: Use a sieve to sift the matcha powder before preparing your drink. Sifting ensures that the matcha powder is smooth and free of clumps, which improves both the texture and taste of the matcha.

2. Using your bamboo whisk or milk frother, mix your matcha powder with water in your bowl until you get a smooth and creamy texture.

3. Add your choice of milk and enjoy.

What does Ceremonial grade mean?

Ceremonial-grade matcha refers to the highest quality of matcha, specifically grown and prepared for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. It is made from the youngest, most tender leaves of the tea plant, which are carefully shade-grown and harvested by hand.

The best way to drink ceremonial-grade matcha is to enjoy it in its traditional, pure form to fully appreciate its rich, umami flavor and smooth texture. Or as a matcha latte.

You can find our Ceremonial matcha powder here.

What does Organic matcha mean?

Organic matcha refers to matcha that is grown and produced without the use of synthetic chemicals such as pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Instead, organic farming practices are followed to ensure the tea plants are grown naturally, in a way that is better for both the environment and consumers.

All our matcha is 100% organic, whereas only only one is Ceremonial. You can find our plain Organic matcha here.

How do I store my matcha?

Matcha is ideally stored in a cool, dark place where it remains maximally vibrant. We recommend to store the tin in the fridge once it's opened.

How do I use my matcha whisk?

Using a matcha whisk, or chasen, is an essential part of traditional matcha preparation, helping you achieve a smooth, frothy consistency.

Before using your whisk for the first time, clean the whisk by soaking it in a bowl of hot water for a couple of minutes. This helps prevent the prongs from breaking and makes whisking easier.

Whisk simply by adding hot water to your matcha and make a M-shaped zigzag motion with your tool.

Once you are done whisking your matcha, soak the whisk in warm water and do not use soap or your dishwasher. Dry your whisk properly after use.
